Spice up your life! Become an Intern.

Learn more about what I do!
Here's a portion of an interview I did recently regarding my business.

What do you do at work on a typical day?
Scout out trails, work in my office in my home or teach classes on 2 campuses.

What is your work schedule like (hours, vacation time, travel opportunities, etc.)?
I work out of my home so I can work whenever I like. I usually get up before 7 am or earlier and start working in my office while my brain is fresh with ideas. I like to work on writing my books early in the morning. I ski, snowshoe, hike, kayak generally between 9 am - 1 pm. Then I juggle several office tasks during the rest of the day, including home/mother duties since I'm a wife and mother of four. My business assistants communicate with me via email most of the time since we don't have a lot of time for in-person meetings. I teach a few hours of classes in the evenings and I'm exhausted by 9 pm. I like to go to bed early and sometimes I get up really early around 3 or 4 am and write books or plan my day.

What special training, education, or skills do you need for your job?
Organizational skills, creative skills and be willing to take risks. Other important skills and education needed are public speaking, computer, marketing, promoting, math, writing, public relations, online selling and retail sales, English, keyboarding, the ability to think quickly on your feet, problem solving skills, improvisational skills, ability to make decisions, leadership skills, etc.

What other related jobs could you do with your training and skills?
Because I have developed an assortment of skills I can go into several different types of jobs for example, with my teaching skills I’ve developed I can go anywhere in the world and teach. Since much of my business is online, I can be mobile and work wherever I want to and choose my own hours – as long as I have Internet access.

Do you use any special tools, equipment or materials on your job?

When I’m in the office I use regular office equipment like a computer, etc. When I’m outside as an outdoor recreation guide I use snowshoes, skis, camping equipment, hiking equipment, kayaks, bikes, zipfys, etc. When I teach cooking classes I use a pressure cooker, wheat grinder, slow cooker, bosch mixer, blender, etc. When I DJ or teach dance classes I use sound equipment and mics. When I perform or teach Theater Classes I play piano, use sound equipment and props and costumes.

How did you become interested in this career, and why did you choose it?
I really like helping people and I love promoting. I love performing and I love learning new things, then teaching them to other people and helping other people succeed - no matter what their age or ability.

What do you like most about your job?
I love many things about my job! I love to work hard, be active, have a lot of variety and be around different types of people. I love writing books, teaching classes, learning and trying new things and exploring new places. I love promoting what I am passionate about and capturing a lot of it through photography. I love helping people be active and helping them be happier and healthier.

What do you like least about your job? I don’t like the fact that I can only be one place at one time. I want to learn how to clone myself! I don't have enough time to do everything I want to do in my job - especially exploring new places, people and things.

How long have you been working at this job?
I started promoting when I was five years old. I’ve been working on building my skills, education and talents most all of my life.

What other jobs have you had? I’ve been a performer, teacher, producer, promoter, singer, dancer, guide, secretary, building manager, sales clerk, demonstrator, actress, public speaker, photographer, chef, etc.

Which school subjects helped you prepare for your career?
English, dancing, musical theater, history, science, math, business, vocal music, home ec, plus five years of college including performing on tour with a musical theater company, etc.

What could a student be doing now to prepare for your type of career?
Become an intern and work side by side someone who is living their dream, like me. Learn organizational skills, learn how to manage your money and your time. Learn how to prioritize things in your life. Go on outings with me, attend classes that I teach, learn to be dependable, responsible and reliable so that you can be trusted to become an assistant. Learn to love people and be willing to help people. Have a love for life, be passionate, be positive and look on the bright side of things. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

Do you have any advice for a student interested in your career? Don’t be afraid to try new things. Don’t ever turn down opportunities that come your way. Find quality people who know you well and who believe in you. Ask them to help you know and understand your strengths and weaknesses. Try lots of things. Pay attention to where you excel without that much effort. Observe what you love to do if you never made any money doing it. Put yourself in situations where you are constantly meeting new people. Keep track of them thru an online address book or whatever works for you. Your "people resources" throughout your life will be VERY valuable to you since EVERY person you meet has a LOT of skills, talents, knowledge and contacts.

What kind of future does your career have? How will it change and evolve?
I’ll be involved in my career until I die. I don’t plan to EVER retire and neither will you! Pay attention to the business market and what people want. Be willing to adjust and tweak your business to your clients and students needs. Keep up with technology, attend trade shows so you can keep up on the latest stuff going on. Surround yourself with capable, knowledgeable, loyal, trustworthy people and always be willing to learn from others and admit that you are wrong. Treat people kindly throughout your life, be generous and it will come back a thousand fold.

FAQ:

What is an Internship?

An internship is meant to be a learning experience, where once a skill is mastered, the intern moves on to a new skill. It should build upon itself. Think of the intern as a student wanting to learn how to be a teacher, not just an employee who is doing this because they need a job. However, job opportunities may be offered at the end of the term.

What type of work is involved?

1) Hospitality and Tourism 2) Sales and Marketing 3) Business Administration 4) IT 5) Teaching and Education

What are the qualifications I need to have?

1) Must be teachable and willing to learn new skills.

2) Must have a positive attitude and be willing to try new things. Sheryl's camping guides, for example, are happy in all types of weather conditions, sleeping in a tent OR staying in a luxury hotel.

3) Must be able to be a good follower and a good leader. Be willing to take direction or be willing to be in charge. Since Sheryl's business is built on being active and adventurous, there is a safety factor involved. Sheryl needs people who are willing to use good common sense, obey rules and be safe.

4) Must be someone who cares about people. Our guides and teachers keep their eyes open and are quick to observe the circumstances around them. If someone needs help or assistance, the intern needs to be able to respond quickly.

5) Must be personable. It's important to get to know the people you serve. It's also a lot of fun developing new friendships.

6) Must be a strong leader. Many times you may be in charge of a group of children or adults and they depend on you for leadership.

What type of positions are available? All positions are open. If you are interested, email me.

What is the age requirement?

For teaching in the classroom, you must be 11th grade in High School or older. Because of the liability in the outdoor recreation activities, interested persons must be 21 years or older, however, I am always looking for younger students who are serious who would like to learn valuable skills in this type of business.

What are the benefits of being an Intern with Sheryl? You will have a LOT of fun and variety in your life. You learn many skills and develop your talents and especially your people skills. You'll do things and go places you may have never gone before. Sheryl lives an active, adventurous life of never-ending exploring and discovery. You will meet MANY people from all walks of life and a wide range of interests. It will strengthen you in many areas - emotionally, mentally, physically, spiritually, financially, socially, etc.

Email me if you are interested in learning more!
Thanks for your interest!
